Kurt WetzelHead Coach
Kurt Wetzel '88 concluded his seventh season as head coach of the GA varsity boys soccer team in 2024.
The team finished the 2024 season 3-14-2 (1-8-1).
The team finished the 2023 season with a 6-10-3 record (3-6-1 ). The Patriots placed three players on the All-Inter-Ac League team.
The team finished the 2022 year 11-6-1 (5-4-1) and tied for second place in the Inter-Academic Athletic League. The team also advanced to the second round of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association Tournament. Five members of the team were named All-League performers, with Tyler Weiss '23 being named League MVP.
In 2021, Wetzel and the Patriots finished the season 17-3 overall and 8-2 in Inter-Ac play. GA not only won the league, but also finished as runners-up in the PAISAA Championship. Seven members of the team were named All-League performers, with Christian Combs '22 being named League MVP.
In his first season in 2018, Wetzel guided a young GA team to a 3-14-2 overall record. The team placed two athletes on the All-League team.
In his second season, the 2019 Patriots went 11-8-2 overall and 4-6 in league play.In a shortened season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Patriots finished 2-1 overall (all Inter-Ac League opponents).
Wetzel is a 1988 graduate of GA and is a Lower School teacher. Wetzel provides general oversight to the entire 6-12 boys soccer vertically aligned program.
Wetzel has been coaching soccer at GA for various teams since 2003. He served as the boys varsity assistant from 2010-15, and, in 2016 and 2017, he coached the boys junior varsity team. He was a presence with the Whitpain Recreation Association Travel Soccer program, serving as coach for both boys and girls teams from 2009-2024. Wetzel has also headed up the GA Summer Programs soccer camp as coach and director since 2003. He has been involved since 1993 as a player, manager and league president of the Germantown Academy Alumni Team in the Philadelphia Cricket League – the oldest soccer league in the country – and played for the Colonial Soccer Club Over 30 team.
"I am honored to take on the responsibility of leading the boys soccer program," said Wetzel. "As a teacher and coach I have had the privilege of working with students in all divisions at GA over the last 20 years and my relationships with students and parents has allowed me to build a culture of honor and respect in the classroom and on the playing field. This new opportunity will allow me to continue my work in developing hard-working student-athletes who respect their teammates, opponents, and the game. I look forward to helping the athletes to become confident and collaborative young men on the field, while developing teamwork and leadership skills that will carry far beyond the playing field."

Facility
Carey Stadium (310 Morris Road, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, 19034) is home to GA boys soccer. It was opened in 2010 as a multi-sport facility that includes a 200 x 380’ artificial turf field, a regulation track surface with six lanes, high jump area, long jump pit and easy on-and-off sideline access. Lines are drawn on the field for football, soccer and lacrosse. The bleacher seating can accommodate 850 spectators and are handicap accessible. Carey Stadium also houses a concession stand equipped with electrical, an ice machine and a reach-in cooler; restroom facilities, as well as two team gathering rooms, private referee room and a trainer’s room equipped with sink, ice machine and treatment bed. The scoreboard in the corner of the Stadium is a multi-sport unit that displays the game clock, home and away scores, time outs left, quarter and football-related information. There is a sound system that is operated from the top of the Stadium where there is a 10-seat granite-topped work area with several electrical outlets and jacks for the microphone and music; all protected by an awning. The Stadium speakers are located on top of the scoreboard. There are several handicap parking spaces adjacent to the entrance to the Stadium in addition to more than 200 spaces spread between two parking lots for the outdoor athletics complex. More parking is available on the GA campus by crossing the Wissahickon Creek by car and returning by foot on the brick pathway. Germantown Academy has hosted many lacrosse and soccer tournaments and was the home to the first coed Inter-Academic Athletic League Track and Field Championships in 2012.

The first points of the 2024 GA/PC rivalry was won three days before the actual day's events as the GA golf team tied Penn Charter, 4-4, and each team entered the day with a half-point. On the 138th GA/PC Day, the Patriots were unable to win back the coveted Competition Cup, falling to PC, 8-2.

The Inter-Academic League released its All-League teams for the 2023 fall season. Germantown Academy was well-represented on the lists, with 22 student-athletes being recognizeD, one of whom was named the Most Valuable Player for their respective sport.

For the second time in as many games, Germantown Academy’s boys soccer team proved to be too much for the competition. After dominating Lawrenceville School on Sept. 21, 5-0, the Patriots tallied three goals from three different goal scorers in the first half to best Perkiomen School, 3-1, on Sept. 28.
